Multiply the recipe and make a pitcher for a party of healthy hipsters.

Ingredients (makes one):

  • 1 tablespoon fresh lime juice?
  • 4 large mint leaves
  • 2 teaspoons sugar?
  • 1/2 cup brewed green tea, chilled?
  • 1 ounce white rum

Directions:

  • Muddle the lime juice, mint leaves and sugar together until the flavours release. Add ice until the glass is about 3/4 full and then pour in rum and green tea. Stir thoroughly.

Texas district attorney, wife found dead at home

KAUFMAN, Texas (AP) ? A Texas prosecutor and his wife were found killed in their house two months after one of his assistants was gunned down near their office, authorities said.

Investigators found the bodies of Kaufman County District Attorney Mike McLelland and his wife, Cynthia, on Saturday, said Kaufman County sheriff's Lt. Justin Lewis. Police, FBI agents, Texas Rangers and deputies were part of the investigation.

Assistant district attorney Mark Hasse was shot to death in a parking lot a block from his office on Jan. 31.

Lewis declined to say how the couple died or whether authorities believe their deaths are linked to Hasse's. He wouldn't provide further details.

Kaufman Police Chief Chris Aulbaugh told The Dallas Morning News that the McLellands had been shot in their home and that although investigators didn't know if their deaths and Hasse's were related, they couldn't discount it.

"It is a shock," Aulbaugh told the paper. "It was a shock with Mark Hasse, and now you can just imagine the double shock and until we know what happened, I really can't confirm that it's related but you always have to assume until it's proven otherwise."

Sam Rosander, who lives in the same unincorporated area of Kaufman County as the McLellands, told The Associated Press that sheriff's deputies were parked in the district attorney's driveway for about a month after Hasse was killed.

Aulbaugh said recently that the FBI was checking to see if Hasse's killing could be related to the March 19 killing of Colorado Department of Corrections head Tom Clements, who was gunned down after answering the doorbell at his home. He said it's routine for authorities to look for possible links when there are similarities between two deaths.

Evan Spencer Ebel, a former Colorado inmate and white supremacist who authorities believe killed Clements and a pizza deliveryman two days earlier, was killed in a March 21 shootout with Texas deputies about 100 miles from Kaufman.

Hasse was chief of the organized crime unit when he was an assistant prosecutor in Dallas County in the 1980s, and he handled similar cases in Kaufman County, 33 miles southeast of Dallas.

McLelland had said Hasse was one of 12 attorneys on his staff, all of whom handle hundreds of cases at a time.

"Anything anybody can think of, we're looking through," McLelland said after the assistant prosecutor was killed.

In recent years, Hasse played major roles in Kaufman County's most high-profile cases, including one in which a justice of the peace was convicted on theft and burglary charges and another in which a man was convicted of killing his former girlfriend and her 10-year-old daughter.

McLelland graduated from the University of Texas before a 23-year career in the Army, according to the website for the district attorney's office. He later earned his law degree from the Texas Wesleyan School of Law.

He and his wife have two daughters and three sons. One son is a police officer in Dallas.

(AP) ? Prospects for a Senate deal on an ambitious rewrite of the nation's immigration laws improved markedly as business and labor appeared ready to set aside their differences over a new low-skilled worker program holding up the agreement.

The AFL-CIO and U.S. Chamber of Commerce had been fighting over wages for tens of thousands of low-skilled workers who would be brought in under the new program to fill jobs in construction, hotels and resorts, nursing homes and restaurants, and other industries. But on Friday, officials from both sides said there was basic agreement on the wage issue, and Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., said a final deal on the low-wage worker dispute was very close.

That likely would clear the way for Schumer and seven other senators in a bipartisan group to unveil legislation the week of April 8 to overhaul the U.S. immigration system ? strengthening the border, cracking down on employers, allowing in tens of thousands of new high- and low-skilled workers and providing a path to citizenship for the estimated 11 million illegal immigrants already in the country.

"We're feeling very optimistic on immigration: Aspiring Americans will receive the road map to citizenship they deserve and we can modernize 'future flow' without reducing wages for any local workers, regardless of what papers they carry," AFL-CIO spokesman Jeff Hauser said in a statement. "Future flow" refers to future arrivals of legal immigrants.

Under the emerging agreement between business and labor, a new "W'' visa program would bring tens of thousands of lower-skilled workers a year to the country. The program would be capped at 200,000 a year, but the number of visas would fluctuate, depending on unemployment rates, job openings, employer demand and data collected by a new federal bureau pushed by the labor movement as an objective monitor of the market.

The workers would be able to change jobs and could seek permanent residency. Under current temporary worker programs, personnel can't move from employer to employer and have no path to permanent U.S. residence and citizenship. And currently there's no good way for employers to bring many low-skilled workers to the U.S. An existing visa program for low-wage nonagricultural workers is capped at 66,000 per year and is supposed to apply only to seasonal or temporary jobs.

The Chamber of Commerce said workers would earn actual wages paid to American workers or the prevailing wages for the industry they're working in, whichever is higher. The Labor Department determines prevailing wage based on customary rates in specific localities, so that it varies from city to city.

There was also disagreement about how to deal with certain higher-skilled construction jobs, such as electricians and welders, and it appears those will be excluded from the deal, said Geoff Burr, vice president of federal affairs at Associated Builders and Contractors. Burr said his group opposes such an exclusion because, even though unemployment in the construction industry is high right now, at times when it is low there can be labor shortages in high-skilled trades, and contractors want to be able to bring in foreign workers. But unions pressed for the exclusion, Burr said.

The low-skilled worker issue had loomed for weeks as perhaps the toughest matter to settle in monthslong closed-door talks on immigration among the senators, including Republicans John McCain of Arizona and Marco Rubio of Florida. The issue helped sink the last major attempt at immigration overhaul in 2007, when the legislation foundered on the Senate floor after an amendment was added to end a temporary worker program after five years, threatening a key priority of the business community.

The amendment passed by just one vote, 49-48. President Barack Obama, a senator at the time, joined in the narrow majority voting to end the program after five years.

Hello everyone!

I am new to the forum, and I am hoping I can get some good advice and input from people who have been through similar situations. Please forgive the length of this post but I want to give as many details as possible.

My SO and I have been together for a little over 6 years. I am 33 and he is 40. At times throughout the relationship, we have had issues. He has a very unstable background and has been cheated on in all his past relationships. I come from a very emotionally abusive background and witnessed both my parents fight constantly when I was young. My mother is also very controlling, abusive and manipulative.

That being said, we are now acting out our issues in a vicious cycle with each other that is not getting any better. It reached a point last week where I actually called my father to come help me move out. I am not afraid of physical abuse, but the emotional and mental abuse had gotten to be too much.

The typical cycle of the fight is this: I confront him with something, usually when I am frustrated. This is not usually something he is done, it is more like a situation that needs fixing (the cat tore one of the screens, something is wrong with the dryer, etc.). He either A. reacts non emotionally to me and we solve the problem together or B. reacts like he is being attacked and then shuts me down with some quick dismissal of the situation (why are you so uptight about it? how did I cause this problem and why are you yelling at me?, etc.). If the latter reaction happens, I then get mad that I am not being heard or that he is not listening to me and I do everything in my power to MAKE him hear me. This includes me yelling at him. If he walks out of the room I will follow him and talk to him until I am blue in the face. He will then at some point lose it with me, scream at me and call me every name in the book, and then leave the house. It should be noted that he has NEVER been physical with me. I, on the other hand, have shoved him, hit him on the shoulder, and thrown things at him. He is VERY verbally abusive with the name calling.

The last straw was where he told me he wanted me out of his house and out of his life, and then proceeded to tell me what I was doing to him was the equivalent of him spitting on me (he illustrated this by spitting on my feet) and then just saying I was sorry and expecting him to be fine. That was it for me. I said fine, you want me out then I am gone.

I left, went to stay at my mother in law's house for the night and then went back the next day with my Dad when he was not home to get all of my things. When he came home and saw everything gone, he lost it. Called me, begged me to come home. Asked if my Dad would be willing to talk to both of us and act as mediator. (It should be noted that my Dad and Mom are now divorced and that my Dad went through intense therapy to overcome his issues in the marriage. He is currently going through classes to become a certified counselor to help others who are in his former situation.)

My Dad listened to both of us for over three hours and came to the conclusion that I am abusing my SO by berating him verbally when I feel like I am not being heard. My SO is abusing me when he is calling me names. He suggested we go to counseling, and both SO and I agreed. We are starting next week.

Here are my issues:

1. Deep down, I feel like what I have done to my SO is not nearly as bad as what he has done to me.

2. I feel like my SO does not accept responsibility for his actions ie. "If she didn't just keep pushing me, I would never get to the point of calling her those names".

These are (I think) going to be the two main things we are really going to have to work on.

Does anyone have any advice for this?

I will say that we do genuinely love each other and we both do want things to be better. I would also say that not all aspects of the relationship are broken. Neither one of us seeks the other out to abuse them ie. he doesn't just come into the room and say "hey you suck" and I don't just pick a fight to pick a fight. And we do laugh. We laugh so much with each other. Overall I think it's mostly good, we just have one aspect that is unfortunately REALLY bad.

Again, we both want to work this out. "Just leave him" is not the response I am looking for from anyone. I feel like we do have a good shot with counseling, and I am looking for advice on what I can do to make the counseling as effective as possible.

Thanks in advance for any imput!

I think your Dad is right about both of you. A relationship without respect isn't much of a relationship.

For the record you equally are mistreating one another, it's not you doing something worse or he doing something worse, it's both of you on your worst behavior.

And let's go further. You say you feel he's not accepting responsibility for his actions... what you are saying is that he is responsible for controlling his temper. This is true. But so are YOU. What responsibility are you taking for that? There is such thing as cause and effect. Yelling at him will produce... what? That's right, an equally offensive response (since you both lack self control).

Following him around yelling at him is bullying. If you don't want to get called out of your name, you need to knock it off. Not saying his reaction is right, but you are setting yourself up to be hurt when you do that.

Glad you're going to therapy together. I hope you get some new tools for communicating better.

A Bit Much - I agree. I am willing to acknowlege that what I am doing as wrong, but I also don't want him to use that as a get out of jail free card in therapy like "she does this, so I do that". I mean, at the end of the day, he chooses what to say to me. Nothing justifies either of our behaviors.

Jamison - We are starting counseling ASAP.

Josh - Yes ! I do realize that! That's why I said I think those are the two things we have to REALLY work on. We both think that what we are doing to the other one is no big deal, and that what the other is doing to us is huge. Neither one of us thinks that OUR OWN behavior is really that bad.

All - Are there any questions that I could ask a therapist or any topics to bring up that would be beneficial?

Also, the fallout with my girlfriends has been awful. They all know about the last fight, they know my Dad came up, and now they know we're trying counseling. With the exception of a couple of them, they all think I am Rhianna and he is Chris Brown. A few of them have outright told me I am crazy and just a battered woman who is running back to her abuser.

It's starting to make me think I AM crazy. Again, he has NEVER been physically abusive with me. Not one single time. I also have never felt threatened in that way.

I feel like, even if we go to counseling and get help and things change that those friendships will never be the same. Is this something I just have to accept?

This is what happens when you allow your friends to be all up in your business, and your Dad too. I wasn't going to comment before but now I see there are all these other people between you I should say it's not a good idea to do that.

One thing you should remember when you want to overshare is that you will let things go and forgive once you calm down... you move on and it's a brand new day and you're all in love again. Your friends, your family don't. They don't love him and don't share what you share together. They hear the bad stuff and it stays with them long after you've let it all go.

It's exactly what happened to Chris and Rihanna. See how they got back together? Well not one of us is IN their relationship, we judge what they put out there to us and it looked really bad. At the end of the day though, she forgives him and loves him anyway. Others may not like it, but honestly it's not our business, it's theirs.

I think part of your cycle is that as you state here, you come to him with something that isnt a confrontational issue AS a confrontation.: " I confront him with something, usually when I am frustrated. This is not usually something he is done, it is more like a situation that needs fixing ". Why would you "confront" him about issues like these? It sounds like his defenses immediately go up because you come at him with both guns blazing, instead of like, "hey, can you help me with something?" And NO ONE wants someone following them around screaming their fool head off at them, either. You are lucky he hasnt popped you one for that actually, its probably just a matter of time if you continue. I think you would do well to change your approach to him, ease up. You seem full of a lot of anger and resentment, and what you are doing is counterproductive. I am seeing that YOU are the one being abusive in this situation, and he is responding to that. Responding badly, yes, and that is what HE needs to work on.

You Have My Attention... Hello! - Internet Marketing Business Forum

Hey, what?s up? I didn't see an introduction area so I guess this is ok. I?m Steve and I?m a 24 year old guy from the UK. I?m dedicated to making a living on the Internet and be a part of this community, contributing, sharing my experiences and all that jazz.

I consider myself an enthusiastic and hard working entrepreneur that always achieves my goals in the online marketing industry and still enjoying life outside. I haven?t won the lottery (yet), and I?m not some guru claiming millions. I am still young but I?m definitely on the road to success.

My Story

I used to have this job as a multimedia sales assistant for 5 years and in between that I was studying health and fitness which I am now a certified personal trainer. As time went on Personal Training in my area is not easy and working in a gym was too competitive so I ended up pulling the plug seeking a new path.

It was a weird feeling but I wanted to focus on what I really enjoyed and that was Internet Marketing. I got myself an Internet Marketing coach and I was doing Online Marketing Management with a company. Unfortunately I was made redundant but after feeling bad about it, I immediately decided to work for myself.

So now I?m here and I just want to say that I look forward to speaking with other IMB Forum members and getting involved in the conversations.

All The Best,
Steve.

Authors Guild head blasts Amazon buy of Goodreads

NEW YORK (AP) ? Authors Guild president and best-selling novelist Scott Turow is condemning Amazon.com's purchase of Goodreads, a leading book recommendation website.

In a statement posted Friday on the Guild home page, Turow called the acquisition a "textbook example" of how a monopoly is built. Seattle-based Amazon.com Inc. announced Thursday that it had bought Goodreads, a favorite Internet stop for readers to review and discuss books. Founded in 2007 and based in San Francisco, Goodreads has 16 million subscribers.

Goodreads co-founder Otis Chandler is defending the sale, which has set off a debate about Amazon's market power. In a blog posting Thursday on Goodreads, Chandler said that Goodreads would continue to operate independently and that Amazon's resources would help his company reach more readers.

What role do small dams play in pollution control?

Mar. 28, 2013 ? Sometimes, little things can add up to a lot. In short, that's the message of a research study on small dams, streams and pollution by Steve Powers, a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Notre Dame's Environmental Change Initiative (ECI).

"Small dams, reservoirs and ponds trap water pollution, which provides an important benefit to water resources," Powers said. "This is especially relevant in agricultural lands of the Midwest U.S., where there are lots of small, but aging dams."

Although small individually, the sum total of the small reservoirs and ponds have a global surface area comparable to that of all large reservoirs added together.

Powers and his fellow researchers showed in detail how a small aging dam, which was more than 100 years old and located in agricultural Wisconsin, trapped water pollutants associated with fertilizer and manure runoff. They also showed an increase in downstream transport of nutrient pollution after the dam was removed, which occurred because of concerns about the dam's safety.

"Many small dams are threatened by long-term structural decline and are also filling with sediment," Powers said. "If we don't better incorporate how small dams affect the movement of water and wastes through the environment, their benefit to downstream water quality could be lost. Meanwhile, legacy sediment and pollution currently trapped behind dams could release as dams lose their water storage capacity, fall apart, or are removed deliberately."

Powers notes that there is a crucial need to gain a better understanding of what small dams mean for our water quality before they crumble and disappear.

"I am continuing to work on the subject at a broader regional scale by looking at hundreds of stream and river monitoring stations throughout the Midwestern U.S. to detect signals of dams," he said. "One current goal is to try and figure out which regions are most vulnerable to water quality changes caused by accumulation of sediment and phosphorus behind dams."

The research paper appeared in the Journal of Geophysical Research-Biogeosciences.

Powers is conducting his research as part of the Notre Dame Environmental Change Initiative's Land Use Project. The Environmental Change Initiative conducts policy-oriented research designed to help policy-makers manage environmental changes.

Samsung Exynos Octa now rocking LTE, destined for Korean market

Samsung Exynos Octa now rocking LTE, destined to Korean market

When Samsung's Exynos 5 Octa was announced, it was believed to be compatible with 3G networks only. As such, the HSPA+ (global) version of the Galaxy S 4 was the only handset to feature the company's eight-core SoC -- the LTE model shipping with Qualcomm's 4G-capable, quad-core Snapdragon 600 instead. That's apparently changed, with the Korean giant tweeting that the Exynos 5 Octa now supports LTE on 20 bands. So why even make a Snapdragon 600 version of the Galaxy S 4, then? Perhaps Samsung can't produce as many chips as Qualcomm to meet the upcoming worldwide demand for its new flagship. This appears likely, with inews24 and new-samsunggalaxys4 reporting that the Exynos 5 Octa with LTE is currently reserved for Korean models only (SHV-E300S, SHV-E300K and SHV-E300L, to be exact). So, anyone fancy a trip to Seoul in the near future?

John Edwards? daughter speaks out on his affair

Cate Edwards with her father, John, in North Carolina in 2012 (Sara D. Davis/Getty Images)John Edwards? daughter Cate is finally speaking out about her father?s affair with a former campaign aide, which effectively ended his marriage to her late mother, Elizabeth, and killed his political career.

?I was devastated, and I was disappointed,? Cate Edwards tells NBC?s Savannah Guthrie in an interview set to air Friday on the ?Today? show and ?Rock Center with Brian Williams.? ?I mean, these are my parents. I had grown up with a lot of love in my family.?

According to interview excerpts released by the network, Edwards tells NBC her father told her about the affair directly. Asked if she was mad, she tells Guthrie, ?Yeah, yeah of course.?

In spite of her anger over her father's affair, Cate Edwards, who is a lawyer, stood by John Edwards' side when he went on trial last year for alleged campaign finance violations related to his efforts to hide his affair from his wife and the public. The proceedings ended in a mistrial.

Edwards tells NBC that she met Rielle Hunter, the campaign videographer who later gave birth to John Edwards? baby, during her father?s 2008 bid for the Democratic presidential nomination, but implies that she hasn?t since. (Cate and her siblings, Jack and Emma Claire, have reportedly met their half-sister, Frances Quinn Hunter.) Asked about Hunter?s book trashing Elizabeth Edwards, who died in 2010, Cate calls the book ?a poor choice.?

?I guess that?s all I can say,? she says.

Asked about the death of her mother, Edwards says she is still grieving and misses her mother every day, in part because of small things.

?I get away with bad grammar. I never used to get away with bad grammar,? she tells NBC. ?You know, I find a great deal online. We were super competitive about finding the best deal online.?

    GameStick gets GameStop-backing, pre-loaded titles

OUYA may have nabbed the spotlight in the Android-based, Kickstarter-supported console wars, but the diminutive GameStick's got some heat behind it, too. The device's makers are putting on a bit of a show at this year's GDC, announcing a slew of news around the forthcoming product. At the top of the list are a number of backers, including, most prominently, the similarly-named GameStop, which clearly sees a viable future in such products, as the world continues to move away from brick-and-mortar outlets. Shadowgun and Smash Cops were also revealed as pre-installed titles for the console, "ensuring GameStick users have free, quality content ready to go out of the box."

Early-Onset Baldness and the Risk of Prostate Cancer

baldness and prostate cancerBald men may be beautiful, but losing hair early could raise the risk for prostate cancer, especially in African-American men, according to a new study from the American Association for Cancer Research.

The study, which appears in the journal Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention, looked at more than 300 African-American men with prostate cancer and more than 200 controls between 1998 and 2010. The men had either a full head of hair or frontal baldness.

?We focused on African-American men because they are at high risk for developing prostate cancer and are more than twice as likely to die from prostate cancer than other groups in the United States,? said Charnita Zeigler-Johnson, Ph.D., research assistant professor at the Center for Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, in a press release. ?Although this is a high-risk group for poor prostate cancer outcomes, no published study had focused on evaluating baldness as a potential risk factor in a sample of African-American men.?

The results: Men with any baldness had a 69 percent increased risk of prostate cancer. Those with frontal baldness had more than double the risk for advanced prostate cancer diagnosis. The risk was even stronger among African-American men who were diagnosed with prostate cancer before age 60. ?Early-onset baldness may be a risk factor for early-onset prostate cancer in African-American men, particularly younger men,? Zeigler-Johnson said.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men and it is the second most common cause of death. African-American men have higher rates than men of other races.

'Breaking Bad' script missing after car break-in

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) ? A man accused of breaking into "Breaking Bad" actor Bryan Cranston's car late last year and stealing a script for the popular television show set in New Mexico has been arrested, authorities said Monday.

Bernalillo County Sheriff's officials said Xavier Macafee, 29, was being held on suspicion of burglary.

Macafee, of Albuquerque, was booked into jail last Friday and made his initial court appearance Monday, according to authorities who didn't immediately know if he had a lawyer.

Deputy Aaron Williamson, a spokesman for the sheriff's department, said none of the stolen items have been recovered but detectives were investigating the case.

He said other items reported taken from Cranston's car were an iPad, a shoulder bag and "miscellaneous personal items."

Cranston's car was broken into Dec. 20 while it was parked at Sandia Peak, authorities said.

The award-winning AMC TV series is set in Albuquerque and is filming its fifth and final season in and around the city.

"Breaking Bad" follows Cranston's character Walter White producing and selling methamphetamine with a former student named Jesse Pinkman, who's played by Aaron Paul.

A call to AMC network officials in California for comment on the script theft wasn't immediately returned Monday afternoon.

What spring? Snow snarls traffic, flights on East Coast

(Reuters) - The first Monday of spring brought snow instead of sunshine along the East Coast, snarling the morning commute in the densely populated stretch between Washington and New York.

A storm that had dropped significant amounts of snow across the Midwest over the weekend rolled across Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia and New Jersey, bringing a slushy mix of snow and rain that prompted school closings and contributed to traffic accidents around the region.

Around Washington, the wet, heavy snow shut down schools or delayed openings throughout the area, and local governments also moved back their opening times. Local utilities reported scattered outages.

For the first time since January 2011, snow measured more than an inch at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport.

The National Weather Service had winter storm warnings in effect from Massachusetts to South Carolina, with as much as 10 inches recorded in mountainous parts of West Virginia and up to a foot expected in Pittsburgh.

"Right now the eastern suburbs of (Washington) D.C. are still seeing moderate it snow and it's extending up through Baltimore and into northeastern Maryland," said Heather Sheffield, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Sterling, Virginia. She said the storm was moving north and snow showers were expected through the day.

Nearly 500 flights in the United States had been canceled, mostly in the New York City area, according to FlightAware.com.

The storm's effects were likely to be felt as far north as Boston, though it was not expected to drop much snow on most of New England, said Tom Kines, senior meteorologist at Accuweather.

"This storm will be different than most we've seen this winter," Kines said. "Most of the storms have affected a good chunk of New England and this one looks like it will head out to sea before then."

Winter's stubborn persistence on the fifth day after the official start of spring has started to take a toll on some parts of the country. Last week an Ohio prosecutor said he would like to charge Punxsutawney Phil, the prognosticating groundhog who in February called for an early spring, with fraud.

The deal reached in Brussels early Monday prevented Cyprus' imminent financial meltdown by securing a last-minute 10 billion euro ($13 billion) bailout on the condition that the country cut back its banking sector and force large losses on big deposits to help pay much of the bill.
